Weathering the Storm: A Guide to Hurricane-Proofing Your Manufactured Home
When hurricane season rolls around, the anxiety for manufactured home owners can be real. There’s a lingering myth that these homes are “tornado magnets,” but modern manufactured homes—especially those built after 1994—are engineered to withstand significant wind loads.
The key isn’t just how the home was built, but how you prepare it. Here is your essential checklist to ensure your home and your family stay safe when the flags go up.
1. Inspect Your Tie-Downs and Anchors
In a high-wind event, your home’s greatest defense is its connection to the ground.
- Check for Rust: Inspect the steel straps (tie-downs) for any signs of corrosion or thinning.
- Tighten Up: Over time, straps can become loose. Ensure they are taut and that the anchors are still firmly embedded in the ground or concrete.
- Verify Compliance: Ensure your anchoring system meets current local building codes for your specific Wind Zone. If you aren’t sure, it is worth hiring a professional to do a “certification of retrofitting.”
2. Secure the “Flying Hazards”
Manufactured homes often feature additions that are vulnerable to being ripped away, turning into dangerous projectiles.
- Carports and Awnings: These act like sails in a hurricane. If possible, remove the fabric or metal panels. If they are permanent, ensure the support posts are extra-secure.
- Skirting: High winds can get under your home and create “uplift,” which can actually lift the structure off its foundation. Ensure your skirting is secure but has enough vents to prevent pressure buildup.
- The Yard: Clear your porch of potted plants, patio furniture, and bird feeders. If it’s not bolted down, it’s a missile.
3. Harden the Building Envelope
Once wind enters a home through a broken window or door, the internal pressure can blow the roof off from the inside out.
- Storm Shutters: Permanent accordion or roll-down shutters are the gold standard. If you don’t have them, pre-cut 5/8-inch marine plywood to fit every window and label them for quick installation.

- Roof Inspection: Check for loose shingles or seams in metal roofing. Use a specialized roof sealant to patch any gaps.
- Tree Trimming: Cut back any branches hanging over your roof. In a storm, “overhang” becomes “impact.”
- Gutters: Clear them out. You want heavy rain to flow away from your foundation, not pool under the home where it can soften the soil around your anchors.
The “Go-Bag” Essentials
If local authorities issue an evacuation order, leave immediately. Manufactured homes are not designed to be stayed in during a direct hit from a major hurricane. Have these ready:
- Important Documents: Titles, insurance policies, and IDs in a waterproof bag.
- Photos of the Home: Take “before” photos of every room and the exterior for insurance purposes.
- Personal Supplies: Three days of water, non-perishable food, and medications.
Pro Tip: Don’t forget to turn off your main water valve and gas/propane supply before you evacuate to prevent flooding or fires caused by shifted lines.
